Join Us in Eradicating Burdock from Our Trails!
Every summer, Sacajawea Audubon volunteers rally to attack burdock and eradicate it from some of our favorite trails. IT’S WORKING! Burdock is getting scarce where we have been working.
August is the perfect time to cut down and remove burdock flower stalks before they entrap songbirds in their Velcro-like seed heads, slowly causing their deaths. You may know burdock from brushing against it and getting burs caught in your hair, your clothes, or your dog’s fur. If we don’t let the plant go to seed, it will die out.
Event Dates and Locations:
Join our Audubon-led work groups to clip seed heads and cut down plants on these dates and locations:
- August 8: Gallagator Trail (Upper) at 7:30 AM (meet on Garfield Street where it intersects Gallagator Trail)
- August 17: Gallagator Trail (Lower) at 7:30 AM (meet at the Peet’s Hill parking lot on Church Ave)
- August 21: Indreland Audubon Wetland Preserve at 6:00 PM (Park at Café M or Town Pump and walk in)
What to Bring:
- Pruning clippers or loppers (if you have them)
- Gloves
- Long sleeves and long pants of fabrics that burs won’t adhere to
Plan to Work:
Plan to work for an hour or two, but whatever time you can afford will make a difference. With your help, we will “Knock Out Burdock”!

PS: Remember to watch for burdock in your own neighborhood. Cut the flowering stalks down, remove all the burs, and dispose of them with the trash. The birds will thank you!
