Curious where the sounds were coming from (and a bit spooked) I was astounded to see hundreds of crows gathered and settling in for the night. As a spooky soul and lover of crows, I could have stayed there all night listening to sounds of rustling feathers, and subtle chatter. <strong>This was my first encounter with a \u201cmurder of crows\u201d.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While this annual phenomenon might remind some of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=kkz9HI75R2c\">unsettling scenes<\/a> from the 1963 Alfred Hitchcock classic, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Birds<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; for birders, it\u2019s a great opportunity to observe crows and their social behaviors. Every fall night around this time you can see masses of American Crows (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corvus brachyrhychos<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) in the trees, but why are they gathering, and why only at this time of the year?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1446 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/bozemanwetlands.org\/WP\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/the-birds-poster.jpg\" alt=\"Hitchcock's The Birds\" width=\"343\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bozemanwetlands.org\/WP\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/the-birds-poster.jpg 472w, https:\/\/bozemanwetlands.org\/WP\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/the-birds-poster-300x205.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 343px) 100vw, 343px\" \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though roosting occurs in smaller groups year-round, it begins in the fall when adults are free of their responsibilities of raising their young. Adult American Crows and their newly fledged young come together in the hundreds to roost in stands of trees at night. In the early afternoon, crows fly in from around the region to gather in raucous \u201cstaging\u201d or \u201cpre-roosting\u201d areas. Some scientists think crows may use this time to share important details about where to find food, resources, and to warn others about danger, while others believe gathering provides safety in numbers &#8211; protection from predation like owls &#8211; or warmth, thermoregulation, in the colder months of the year. Their complex language and roosting behaviors have been studied by researchers like <a href=\"https:\/\/environment.uw.edu\/faculty\/john-marzluff\/\">Bozeman\u2019s Dr. John Marzluff, professor emeritus at the University of Washington<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/corvidresearch.blog\/about\/\">world-renowned corvid expert Dr. Kaeli Swift<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This gregarious roosting behavior is not unique to American Crows, but many other groups of birds as well. Red-winged Blackbirds, European Starlings, Tree Swallows, and Chimney Swifts roost in large numbers, especially around the <a href=\"http:\/\/bozemanwetlands.org\">Indreland Audubon Wetland Preserve<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1447\" style=\"width: 434px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1447\" class=\"wp-image-1447\" src=\"https:\/\/bozemanwetlands.org\/WP\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Red-winged-blackbirds.jpeg\" alt=\"Flock of Red-winged Blackbirds\" width=\"424\" height=\"283\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1447\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: birdsoftheworld.org.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Interested in experiencing this phenomenon for yourself this spooky season? To find your local American crow roost, go outside before sunset, keep your eyes to the sky, and watch the mass \u201cmurder\u201d settle in for the night. Be sure to document your finds on <a href=\"http:\/\/ebird.org\">eBird<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/inaturalist.org\">iNaturalist<\/a> to help biologists understand these behaviors through citizen science data.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Fun Facts about American Crows<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The largest roost on record was recorded in Danville, Illinois with an astounding 325,000 birds.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The largest gathering of crows on record took place near Fort Cobb, Oklahoma, where historical estimates placed a single winter roost at 2 million birds.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Group names for animals like \u201ca murder of crows\u201d originated in the 1486 book, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Book of Saint Albans<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but with the subtitle <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatyses on Hawkyng, Huntyng, and Cote Armours<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The term, \u201ca murder of crows\u201d is 540 years old!* <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Correction from the printed SAS October newsletter: The phrase &#8220;a murder of crows&#8221; does not actually appear in <em>The Book of Saint Albans<\/em>, but famously lists, &#8220;an unkyndenes of rauenes&#8221; (an unkindness of ravens). The term &#8220;murder of crows&#8221; first appeared earlier in John Lydgate&#8217;s poem <em>Hors, Shepe, &amp; Ghoos<\/em>, printed around 1470 and is ~556 years old.<\/strong> Image of original text below has been edited and enhanced for clarity. Murther was an alternative spelling of murder. The spelling comes from older English roots (like Old English morthor). The word evolved from the Old English <em class=\"zhvwWe\" data-sfc-cp=\"\" data-sfc-root=\"ep\">mor\u00f0or<\/em> (meaning a secret or unlawful killing).
